Befriending the floor!

"Folding your legs? You mean crossing over your knee?"

"Folding our legs..?Yes..I know.."

"Sitting on the floor right?"
These are the kind of responses that I got when I asked people about what they think of folding their legs. Of course, it is nothing but sitting on the floor with your legs folded. And...you know it is also known as Sukhasana!
Easy Pose~ Sitting on the floor.
If you're someone like me who wishes to do Yoga and all but can't allocate time then read on.
"Ammaaaaa...Dosaiii!!", I exclaimed where my plate was on my dining table when my mom got little frustrated that all three of us was fighting for that one!
"Must have made you all sit on the floor  so that you won't  fight and would have finished your plates soon!", she exclaimed knowing that we don't like sitting on the floor as our legs will start to ache even before we finish eating.
Knowing that my parents naturally like to sit on the floor, especially while eating, I was pondering why we didn't like it. The answer that she gave me when I asked her pulled me in to ask more questions.

"Floor was our dining place back then" ,she said.
Mouth-watering dishes when cooked using wonderful vessels and are served on a 'perfect' Vazhaelai plus you get to eat along with your family by sitting on the floor is a blissful feeling!  Food is heaven and food is first !ahh!
As she kept on describing, I was very much tempted to try my next supper sitting on the floor and trying it with everyone.
Of course, we didn't have a Vazhaelai readily available (I really feel for it) and I ultimately went with a stainless steel plate!

After successfully bribing my siblings to sit on the floor , mom bought all the vessels with food to the floor and after a long time she sat with us to eat. We stopped playing and teasing each other as she started to served the food. Everything went well until we started to stare at each other's face and we all know what it was! Our legs started to ache! Meanwhile, mom finished her plate and she got up. I was able to sense that all three of us struggled slightly and my brother just got up declaring that his legs were paining, so did my sister. I was left behind with thoughts and to clean up the mess too:(
I noticed quiet few of things, usually we don't get to spend the eating time together. But since we sat on the floor, honestly all of us got some 'we' time to spend with family(Something like teasing or annoying your siblings and bidding adieu to the TV!)
The second important thing is, 'our inability to fold our legs and to sit down for quiet some time!'
The more simpler it seems, more harder it is actually. It is not 'just sitting on the floor' anymore!
Since then, whenever it is possible I push myself to sit down and have my food. Initially, for someone like me who always ditches sitting on the floor, it was hard..my legs would ache and I would stretch my legs for few seconds or so, also I took more time to complete eating and I noticed that I started to eat a little less. I just thought, maybe our stomach might know how much it exactly needs when we sit in this posture!
I believe that It is very similar to the very basic yoga and meditation posture, with countless benefits. Again, it is just a small act from your side that has the potential to take you closer towards being healthy :)
I have some home work for you!
No ! No notebooks! It just needs your will power :)
I challenge you to take up a mini sitting rising test!
The Sitting-Rising test. Where you need to sit down and get up without any support.
This sitting-rising test involves standing, sitting and then rising up in a smooth way without relying on your hands or any other external help.
(If you have any issues related to your knee or leg have a second thought before trying it.)
I still remember when I tried it for the very first time.Honestly ,I wasn't able to do it as expected. It put my self-balance,muscle strength and of course my body's flexibility into tests!Phew! But thankfully, now i'm able to it.
And I really wish even you can do it! Yes people!! Roll up your sleeves, let your feet stand firmly on the floor,go ahead and try!
To make it more interesting, let us rate it on a scale of 0-5.If you use your hands, knee, forearm, side of the leg or take support from your knee you subtract a point from 5 and then subsequently keep subtracting if you take more support.
If you loose your balance then take off half a point.
And thas's it!

Ultimately, I believe in this "Wake up healthier than how you were the previous night!"
Don't you think you should befriend the floor? ;)
Thank you for reading till the end!
